Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program (ORTOP)
Also known as FIRST Oregon
FIRST robotics programs introduce STEM to students through fun, exciting hands-on learning.
Students gain real-world problem-solving experience through global robotics programs serving grades 2 to 12. This season’s FIRST DIVE theme will explore life beneath the surface of the oceans. Along the way, they will uncover the potential in each of us to strengthen our community and innovate for a better world with healthy oceans.
These programs engage students in hands-on STEM experiences that build confidence and a passion for learning. FIRST LEGO League (FLL) uses LEGO robotics to engage students in an annual real-world theme. FLL Explore is available to students in grades 2 to 4 and FLL Challenge is available to those in grades 4 to 8. FIRST Tech Challenge uses a larger format with four robots on a 12x12 foot playing field to engage students in grades 7 through 12 in hands-on STEM as a sport of the mind. FIRST Robotics Competition takes the excitement to the next level in both size and sophistication with large teams of high school students deploying their 120-pound robots competing on a field the size of a basketball court. Teams register with FIRST to obtain program materials and services and with ORTOP to participate in events in Oregon and obtain local support. Season registration fees vary widely from program to program.
Studies conducted by Brandeis University have found that students who participated in a FIRST program showed significant improvements in workforce skills and interest in STEM fields, interest in STEM careers, and STEM knowledge.
ORTOP's website has a wide variety of additional information. For information about volunteering to help make these programs to more youth around Oregon click here.
